Made-to-measure headboards: the complete guide to getting yours right
A made-to-measure headboard is a headboard built to the exact dimensions of your room, in the model, fabric and color you choose. It is the difference between fitting your wall to an off-the-shelf piece and having a piece designed for your wall. This is the complete guide to getting yours right, from size to finish.
Quick answer: a made-to-measure headboard starts around $550, is handcrafted to order in 28 to 50 days, comes with a 1-year warranty, and arrives ready for outlets, switches and LED. You choose the width, the height, the model and the fabric. Here is what really matters when you decide.
What a made-to-measure headboard is
With an off-the-shelf headboard, the size is fixed and the fabric is chosen to keep costs down. You adapt your room to the piece. Made to measure works the other way around: the piece is born for your wall. You set the width (which follows your bed), the height (which gives the right proportion), the model and the fabric. The result fits just right and becomes the focal point of the room, instead of a generic piece of furniture.
The measurements that matter
Two measurements define the piece:
The width follows the width of the bed. Full, queen or king, the headboard is made to match your bed size (and, if you like, it can extend a little past the bed on each side for more presence).
The height changes the feel of the room the most. As a standard, the ideal height is 47 to 55 inches, following the rule of 24 to 31 inches above the mattress. Since it is made to measure, you can go taller, almost to the ceiling in rooms with high ceilings. There is a whole guide on this: see the ideal headboard height.
The fabric makes the piece
The fabric defines the feel, the drape and the personality of the headboard. We work with in-house fabrics included in the price, such as bouclé, linen, velvet and faux leather, and with imported collections. The right color changes everything in the room. If you have not decided yet, the guide on how to choose the fabric helps you get it right.
Ready for outlets, switches and LED
This is the detail almost no one thinks about beforehand, and the one that makes all the difference at installation. We pre-cut the openings for outlets, switches and sconces, with the wiring channels built into the piece. Want an LED strip behind it for that indirect glow? The headboard comes prepared. You receive it ready to position on the wall, no improvising.
Models and finishes
From the cleanest to the most authorial, each model has its own personality. Tufting, nailhead trim, piping, metal profiles, fluting, geometric cuts: the choice sets much of the finishing and the price.
One technical exception is worth knowing: headboards with special cuts or metal profiles follow size rules, because the profiles have a maximum length (we work with about 6.5 and 10 feet). When a project exceeds that limit, the piece may have a maximum height or be split into sections. Nothing that affects the result, just a detail we settle in the design.
How it is made, lead time and warranty
Each headboard is handcrafted to order in the atelier. The structure gets the right foam density for the rest, the fabric is hand-stitched, and the finishing is checked piece by piece. Production takes 28 to 50 days, and every piece comes with a 1-year warranty. Cabeçare has been crafting upholstered furniture since 2013 and has delivered more than 8,300 pieces, so yours is in good hands. Pieces for the US market are handcrafted in our Florida atelier.
How much it costs
A made-to-measure headboard starts around $550, depending on the size, the model and the fabric. Our in-house fabrics are included; imported collections cost extra. If your idea is the complete bed, with base and headboard together, see how much a bed costs. The exact price is set in your quote, built with you.
What about installation?
The piece arrives ready. Since the cut-outs and wiring are already built in, installation is simple: position it on the wall, align and fix. On larger projects split into sections because of the profiles, the pieces fit together to form a single panel.
How to choose yours
In short: set the width by the bed, aim for 24 to 31 inches above the mattress for the height, choose the fabric by color and feel, and remember it arrives ready for outlets and LED. Almost everything can be adjusted. If in doubt, just reach out. We calculate the right measurements and craft your made-to-measure headboard the ideal way.
