What is the ideal headboard height for your bedroom?

Tall custom headboard handcrafted by Sheep & Sleep

The ideal height for a standard headboard is around 47 to 55 inches. And there is one simple rule we use at the atelier to get it right every time: the headboard should sit 24 to 31 inches above the mattress. That rise above the mattress is what makes the piece read just right and frame the bed, instead of disappearing behind the pillows.

The 24-to-31-inch rule above the mattress

When you decide on a height, do not look only at the total number. What really matters is how much the headboard rises above the mattress. If it shows 24 to 31 inches above the top of the mattress, the proportion looks beautiful: it gives the bed presence, holds the pillows nicely and creates that focal point in the room.

So the final height also depends on how tall your bed and mattress are. Taller beds call for slightly taller headboards to keep that same rise. When we design your piece, that is exactly what we calculate.

Standard headboard: 47 to 55 inches

For most bedrooms, a headboard between 47 and 55 inches is the sweet spot. It feels grand without overdoing it, works with a standard ceiling height, and looks great on a full, queen or king bed. If you are unsure and want a safe path, this is where we start.

What about made to measure?

Here is the best part: because each piece is handcrafted, the vast majority of models can be made in any size. Want a taller headboard, reaching almost to the ceiling for a room with high ceilings? We can do it.

There are just a few exceptions, and they are worth knowing. Headboards with special cuts or that use metal profiles (the structures that give the clean straight edges and the channel lines) follow size rules. That is because the profiles come in a maximum length. So when a design goes beyond that limit, the piece may need to be built in sections or have a maximum height. Nothing that hurts the result, just a technical detail we sort out in the design. For the full picture, from fabric to the cut-outs for outlets and LED, see our guide on made-to-measure headboards.

And the price?

A complete bed, headboard included, starts from around $3,300 to $3,540, depending on the model, the size and the fabric you choose. The exact price is confirmed in your quote.
