Bed frame vs upholstered bed: which one actually lasts?
Amazon will sell you a metal bed frame for the price of a dinner out. So why do designers keep specifying upholstered beds? Because the two products answer different questions. The frame asks “how do I hold a mattress off the floor?”. The upholstered bed asks “what should the biggest piece of furniture in my home actually be?”.
Quick answer: a basic frame is fine for short-term setups, rentals and tight budgets. A made-to-order upholstered bed costs more up front (around $2,600 complete) and pays it back in comfort (a real padded backrest), durability (right foam, premium fabric) and a bedroom that finally looks finished. Middle path: keep the frame, add a made-to-measure headboard.
The comparison, side by side
| Criteria | Basic bed frame | Made-to-order upholstered bed |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front price | lowest | from around $2,600 |
| Backrest comfort | none | padded headboard, right foam density |
| Looks | utilitarian | the room’s focal point |
| Fabric and color | none / generic | your choice: bouclé, linen, velvet… |
| Fit | standard sizes only | made to your measurements |
| Lighting and outlets | not planned | cut-outs ready for LED and outlets |
| Lifespan | squeaks and wobbles come early | built to stay for many years |
Where the frame honestly wins
Price, speed and moving day. If you are furnishing a first apartment, a short-term rental or a guest room that sees three nights a year, a frame does the job without ceremony.
Where the upholstered bed wins
Every single night you sit up in bed. Reading, working, watching a show: a padded headboard with proper foam is the difference between comfort and a pillow propped against drywall.
The room itself. The bed is the largest object in the bedroom. When it is beautiful, the whole room organizes around it; when it is an afterthought, no amount of decor compensates.
Time. Cheap pieces are replaced; made-to-order pieces stay. Our beds are handcrafted in our own Florida atelier with the same haute-couture upholstery standard that built Cabeçare’s reputation in Brazil since 2013, 8,300+ pieces ago.
The smart middle path
Not ready for the full bed? Keep your frame and add a made-to-measure upholstered headboard (from around $550): it mounts on the wall, hides the hardware and delivers 80% of the visual upgrade. Our guide on made-to-measure headboards covers it.

Frequently asked questions
Is an upholstered bed better than a bed frame?
For comfort and looks, yes: it has a padded headboard you can actually lean on and it anchors the room visually. A basic frame wins on price and portability. The right answer depends on how long you want the bed to last and how much the bedroom matters to you.
How much does an upholstered bed cost?
At Sheep & Sleep, a complete made-to-order upholstered bed (base plus headboard) starts around $2,600, depending on model, size and fabric, handcrafted in our Florida atelier.
Do upholstered beds wear out?
Mass-produced ones can: thin foam and cheap fabric age fast. A made-to-order piece uses the right foam density and premium fabric, which is exactly what makes it hold up for many years. Ours carry a 1-year warranty.
Can I keep my frame and just add a headboard?
Yes. A made-to-measure upholstered headboard (from around $550) mounts to the wall, hides the frame and transforms the room at a fraction of the cost.
