Diamond tufting is the deep buttoned quilting; channel tufting is the padded vertical bands; piping is the tailored cord along the edges; a wingback wraps the bed with forward-curving sides; and white glove delivery means we install everything and leave no box behind. Below, the 16 terms that show up in every custom headboard conversation, explained by the people who cut and sew these pieces since 2013.
Tufting (diamond / capitonê)
The classic upholstery technique where fabric is pulled deep at regular points, forming diamond folds usually finished with covered buttons. It creates the plush, haute-couture look most associated with luxury bedrooms, and it is the most labor-intensive finish to execute by hand.
Button tufting
Covered buttons marking the upholstery at set points without the deep diamond folds of full tufting. The result is cleaner and more contemporary while keeping dimensional interest. Variations include single-button, piped and three-point layouts.
Channel tufting
Upholstery divided into continuous padded channels, vertical or horizontal. Vertical channels add rhythm and visually stretch the wall upward — one of the most requested finishes in contemporary bedrooms.
Piping (welt)
A fabric-covered cord sewn along edges and frames, like a tailored seam. It defines the outline of the headboard with precision and reinforces high-contact edges.
Wingback
A headboard or bed with side wings that curve forward, embracing the bed like a classic wing chair. It adds enclosure and hotel-suite presence, and is one of the fastest-growing bed searches in the US.
Wall-to-wall headboard
An upholstered panel that spans the entire wall behind the bed, wider than the mattress — often wiring-ready for sconces and LED. The defining bedroom statement of 2026.
Headboard-only
A headboard sold without the bed, mounted directly to the wall. It works with any existing frame or box spring and is the most affordable way to transform a bedroom without replacing the bed.
Upholstered bed frame
A bed structure fully covered in fabric — base and headboard — replacing the bare metal or wood frame. Made to order, it matches the headboard fabric and can include legs, skirts or storage.
Platform bed
A bed whose base supports the mattress directly, with no box spring needed. Upholstered platform beds pair a low, clean profile with a padded headboard.
Bouclé
A woven fabric of looped, curled yarn with a plush, teddy-like texture. It is the most requested fabric in our atelier — 42% of all meters cut across our last 243 orders. Upholstery-grade bouclé uses tight loops, far more durable than the fashion version.
Linen
A natural fiber with a dry hand and quiet, timeless elegance. Tightly woven, it is durable and the safest choice for homes with cats. It accounts for 33% of the meters in our production data.
Velvet
A dense short-pile fabric with depth of color and sheen nothing else matches. On a headboard it does not run warm — there is no prolonged body contact — and it carries deep jewel tones beautifully.
Foam density
The measure of a foam’s firmness and resilience. It is the invisible factor that decides whether upholstery keeps its shape for years or sags early; different areas of a piece call for different densities.
Made to order
A piece built from your exact measurements rather than picked from stock sizes. It allows off-standard widths, ceiling-height panels, cut-outs for outlets and LED, and free choice of fabric and color. Ours takes 28 days of production.
White glove delivery
Delivery where the team brings the piece into the room, installs and levels it, and removes all packaging. Our own team does this throughout Florida — you never assemble anything.
California King
A US mattress size of 72 × 84 inches — narrower and longer than a standard king. Because few stores stock headboards for it, Cal King is one of the most common made-to-measure requests.
