Linen vs. velvet vs. bouclé: which fabric for your headboard?
Every quote at the atelier reaches the same fork in the road: linen, velvet or bouclé? All three are classics, all three age well when the weave is genuine upholstery grade, and all three solve completely different bedrooms. Here is the comparison, backed by something no store shows you: real data on what clients actually choose.
Quick answer: bouclé is our most-requested fabric (42% of all meters cut) and delivers instant texture and warmth; linen (33%) is the most versatile and the safest with pets when tightly woven; velvet (6%) is the most dramatic, with color depth nothing else matches. In all three cases, most colors are included in the listed price.

When to choose each
Bouclé when the room calls for visible coziness: it is the fabric that turned headboards into statement pieces this decade, and the reason it leads our production by a wide margin. Go for tight-loop upholstery weaves (ours are upholstery grade, not the fashion version) and light colors that flatter the texture.
Linen when the goal is elegance that does not shout: it fits any palette, outlives trends, and is the right call for homes with cats, as long as the weave is tight. It is also the go-to for the “hotel room in naturals” look.
Velvet when the headboard is the protagonist of a deep-colored room: nothing holds an emerald green or a terracotta like velvet. On a headboard it does not run warm (no prolonged body contact), and cleaning is simple — vacuum with the pile.
The detail that matters more than the fabric
The foam underneath. Good fabric over the wrong foam sags within two years; that is why every piece we build uses the right foam density for headboard use, and our 1-year warranty covers structure and upholstery alike. Before deciding, ask for free swatches — we mail all three fabrics anywhere in Florida, and seeing the color in your own light changes the conversation.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most popular headboard fabric?
In our atelier's production data, bouclé — 42% of all fabric meters cut across our last 243 orders, ahead of linen (33%) and velvet (6%). It is the defining upholstery fabric of the decade.
Which headboard fabric is best with cats?
Tight-weave linen or velvet. Bouclé's loops can catch claws. A common atelier solution: bouclé on the headboard (out of reach) and a flat-weave fabric on the bed base.
Is velvet too warm for a headboard?
No. Unlike a sofa, a headboard has no prolonged body contact, so velvet on a headboard is about looks — depth of color and light play — not temperature.
Are these fabrics included in the price?
Most of our bouclés, linens and velvets are included in the listed price. Some colors and imported collections carry a surcharge, always stated in your quote before you commit.
